Education Seeks Students for Foreign Language Showcase

Feb. 16, 2007 – The annual St. Thomas-St. John Foreign Language Cultural Showcase is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Tutu Park Mall. This year's program is "Languages: The Key to Common Understanding," and will focus on highlighting student accomplishments in the area of cultural awareness in the languages of study and promote the study of foreign languages, according to Myrna van Beverhoudt, foreign language coordinator. All schools, public, private or parochial, are invited to participate.
The showcase will be judged in two categories: Posters – "Copying the French and Spanish Masters" and theme posters. Students' may also enter projects in a category called "Wonders of the French and Spanish-Speaking Worlds." In this particular section, students produce replicas of outstanding architectural feats of the Spanish or French world (i.e., the pyramids of Mexico or the Louvre in France). Schools are also invited to bring their best original piñatas to be judged. Piñatas should be creative and include a cavity for candy, though they should not be filled with candy. Each school may enter no more than four entries per category, per school (i.e., a maximum of 16 entries per school). The entries must be turned in to the district foreign language coordinator on or before Thursday, April 12. Trophies will be awarded for the winners of the first, second and third places in each category in each division (elementary, K-6; and secondary, 7-12)
Schools may also participate in the variety show segment of the showcase featuring poetry, songs, and dances. This segment runs from 1-3 p.m. and will not be judged, but participation trophies or awards will be given to the schools entering this segment. It is recommended that each school prepare two performances for the variety show but not exceed four entries total.
Van Beverhoudt said, "It is important that interested schools provide their intent to participate to the district office via the registration form no later than Monday, April 2. All entries representing the schools' best efforts are welcomed."
