Feb. 15, 2007 — The V.I. Waste Management Authority will hold its quarterly electronic waste collection days next week at locations on all three islands. Authority spokeswoman Stella Saunders said people should bring their electronic waste to the collection sites because the agency won't accept it at the territory's landfills.
"And if you're caught illegally dumping it, you face a citation that can cost you up to $1,000," Saunders said Thursday. She added that disposing of electronic waste at non-approved collection sites is also bad for the environment.
The list of items to be accepted includes TVs, computers, central processing units (CPUs), monitors, mice, keyboards, power strips, copiers, printers, fax machines, scanners, handheld radios and walkie-talkies. Saunders said fluorescent bulbs are not on the list.
Electronic waste must be placed in a cardboard box, although it doesn't have to be the original box. Additionally, the box can contain several pieces of various equipment. Residents must fill out a form identifying the electronic waste.
Collection dates are Feb. 22, 23 and 24 for both St. Thomas and St. Croix. The date for St. John is Feb. 22 only. All times are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On St. Thomas, drop off items at Warehouse 17 in Sub Base, located across the intersection from Frank's Bakery.
St. Croix's drop-off site is at 941-946 William's Delight, located east of Sunshine Mall.
On St. John, drop items off at the Cruz Bay Park bandstand.
People dropping off items must provide the manpower to get them out of their vehicles.
Residents are limited to three of each item. Saunders said that if residents have more than three of any type of waste, they'll have to pay a small fee for the overage.
There is no charge for residential electronic waste. However, businesses will have to pay a fee that depends on the equipment size. Saunders said smaller pieces will cost businesses between $1 and $5, while larger pieces, like large copy machines, will run $25 to $35.
Only checks and money orders are accepted and should be made out to the V.I. Waste Management Authority.
