Feb. 12, 2007 – Junior high and middle school "mathletes" from St. Thomas and St. John schools will compete in the chapter competition of the national MATHCOUNTS program beginning at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, at Palms Court Harbourview Hotel, according to a press release from the V.I. Department of Education. The competition has been organized by the Education Department and Rotary Club II.
A total of 20 schools and 132 students will compete this year. Schools to be represented include: Addelita Cancryn Junior High, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School; the E. Benjamin Oliver, Evelyn E. Marcelli, Gladys A. Abraham, Jane E. Tuitt, J. Antonio Jarvis, Joseph Gomez, Joseph Sibilly, Julius E. Sprauve, Leonard Dober, Lockhart, Yvonne Milliner-Bowsky and Ulla Muller Elementary Schools; All Saints Cathedral, Antilles, Sts. Peter and Paul, Nisky Moravian, V.I. Montessori, Wesleyan Academy.
Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches covering algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. Winners will receive trophies and plaques. The four "mathletes" with the highest individual scores will advance to the State MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held on St. Thomas in March.
Celebrating its 24th anniversary, the competition will consist of approximately 39,000 students, representing over 6,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools.
