40 Caliber Outlasts Hummers 16-11 in Bob Owens Softball

Jan. 29, 2007 — 40 Caliber scored 14 runs in the first two innings Monday night against the National Guard Hummers and then held on down the stretch for a 16-11 win.
The matchup, played at the D.C. Canegata ballpark in Christiansted, was the feature game of the three scheduled for the night.
Batting first, 40 Caliber exploded for seven runs on three-run shots by Robert Ramsingh and Mapleton Lawrence and a solo shot off the bat of Jamal Krigger to take an early seven-run lead. The Hummers came up empty in the bottom of the first inning.
40 Caliber continued their onslaught in the top of the second inning as they once again plated seven runs to extend their lead to 14-0. They scored seven runs on three two-run home runs apiece by Ramsingh, Krigger and Angel Torres, and an RBI single by Orlando Benitez. The Hummers finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a solo shot off the bat of Francisco Navarro and RBI singles by Jerry Vialet and Randy Nelson, trailing 14-3 at the end of two complete innings.
The Hummers added three more runs in the bottom of the third on a homer by Neal Davis to close the gap to eight runs at 14-6 after 40 Caliber failed to score in the top of the inning.
40 Caliber added one run in the top of the fourth on an error by the Hummers' first-base man to lead 15-6 after four innings as the Hummers came up empty in the bottom of the inning.
After 40 Caliber failed to score in the top of the fifth, the Hummers got a run on a solo shot by Kai Schjang in the bottom of the inning to trail 15-7 at the end of five.
The Hummers added another run on an RBI single by Clinton Phipps in the bottom of the sixth to trail 15-8 after 40 Caliber again failed to score in the top of the inning.
Steve Nisky's RBI single in the top of the seventh extended 40 Caliber’s lead to 16-8. The Hummers had a mild rally going in the bottom of the inning, but were only able to come up with three runs — not nearly enough.
Nisky, the league’s leading pitcher, picked up the victory to move to 10-2 on the year, while Jerry Vialet picked up the loss for the Hummers. His record goes to 7-6. Top hitters for 40 Caliber were Ramsingh, (3 for 4, two home runs, five RBIs), Torres (3 for 4, one homerun and two RBIs) and Krigger (4 for 4, two home runs and three RBIs).
