Lt. Col. David C. Canegata III Dies in the Line of Duty at 50

Jan. 28, 2007 — Lt. Col. David C. Canegata III, 50, valiantly died on Saturday, Jan. 20, while serving his country in the Middle East. He was Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Planning-J-2-J3 of the V.I. National Guard.
Lt. Col. Canegata is survived by his wife, Shenneth; children: Nicole, David Mychal, Andre and Jessica Canegata; grandson, David Mychal Jr.; father, David C. Canegata Jr.; mother, Carmen Canegata; sisters: Dianne Canegata Powell, Terri Evans and Yvette Canegata-Jones; brother, John Canegata; nieces: Shayna Johansen, Faith Powell, Zoe Powell, Alexandrya Evans, Rebekah Evans and Jenna Canegata; nephews: Justin Powell, Joshua Powell, Robert Evans and Jordan Evans; father-in-law, Ronnie Benjamin Sr.; mother-in-law, Jenita Benjamin; sisters-in-law: Anthea Harris and Thays Canegata; brothers-in-law: Wayne Powell, Cornelius Evans, Christopher Jones, Ronnie Benjamin & family, and Vaughn Benjamin & family; aunts: Carmen Lydia Martinez, Claire Motta, and Melba Biggs; uncle, Felito Martinez; the entire Canegata, McDonald, Motta, Weber, Biggs and Benjamin Families; special cousin and fellow soldier, Lt. Col. Michael McDonald; cousins and friends too numerous to mention; special friends: Rosita Rivera, Col. Reynaldo Rivera, Adj. General Eddy Charles, Major Kenneth Alleyne, Col. Timothy Lake, Col. Gene Walker, Col. Elton Lewis, Capt. Marise James, CW2 Augustin Webster, Ulric Benjamin, Bruce Harris, Pastors Dexter and Terry Skepple, the V.I. National Guard family and the Speak the Word family.
A military funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Island Center. The interment will be in the Christiansted Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to “Boys to Men” Youth Mentorship Program, P.O. Box 8304, Christiansted, VI 00823.
