Brief: WAPA Receives Third Bomb Scare This Week

Jan. 26, 2007 — A St. Croix 911 dispatcher received a nonspecific bomb threat to the V.I. Water and Power Authority Friday afternoon, according to WAPA release issued Friday.
V.I. Police officials stated that a male voice indicated that a bomb was going to be placed at WAPA without indicating a specific location or time.
According to the release, protective sweeps were immediately performed at WAPA facilities by WAPA personnel and the Hazardous Devices Unit (bomb unit) of the V.I. Police Department. No evidence of a bomb was discovered.
Friday’s bomb threat followed two bomb threats that were called into WAPA’s St. Croix power plant control room and customer service offices on Wednesday.
WAPA Executive Director Alberto Bruno-Vega has called these events “shameful and criminal acts against the community.”
He reiterated that WAPA’s power plants are classified as critical infrastructure under Homeland Security regulations and all the intelligence-gathering resources of the Homeland Security Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other local and federal agencies will be brought to bear to fully investigate these acts.
The release goes on to state: "In an additional step to provide reassurance to employees and the community, WAPA has immediately moved to enhance security measures which will further ensure the protection of its workforce and facilities."
