Gallery Presents New Work by Two Artists

Jan. 24, 2007 – Gallery St. Thomas will present "The Caribbean in Wood and on Canvas," a special showing of new wood pieces by master wood turner Avelino Samuel and original paintings by Shari Erickson on Friday, Jan. 26. A reception for both artists will be held from 5-8:30 p.m., at Gallery St. Thomas, located at No. 1 Main Street above The Crystal Shoppe.
"Shari Erickson uses bold color and strong compositions to define her vision of Caribbean life and landscapes," said Claire Ochoa, owner of Gallery St. Thomas. "Already popular in the Caribbean, Erickson will introduce a new theme, 'The Joy of Carnival,' at the exhibit. This grouping of canvases vibrates with a sense of fun and excitement and includes smaller paintings of children taking part in the festivities."
"Avelino Samuel has developed an ever-expanding base of collectors around the world during more than twenty-five years of creating works of art from island woods," said Ochoa. "We're excited that he'll show a dozen new pieces of his turned wood art during this exhibit." Samuel, a St. John native, creates vessels in both classical and modern styles using woods such as genip, copper, amarod, white prickle, guazuma, cocolobo and golden shower as well as mahogany.
All work is available for sale. For more information, contact Gallery St. Thomas at 777-6363 or online at www.GalleryStThomas.com.
