Jan. 25, 2007 – Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen announced today that the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 392, a bill to allow the District of Columbia and the U.S. Territories to participate in the 50 State Commemorative Quarter Dollar Coin Program for the fourth time.
In comments during the floor debate on the bill, Christensen said, "We have a commitment to get it passed in the Senate this time."
Inclusion of the 6 non-state areas will mean that the Virgin Islands, like each of the 50 states, will eventually get the opportunity to have a significant event commemorated on the back of a quarter.
"Many in the Congress agree that we should all be treated as Americans and that passage would represent a wonderful opportunity to educate people around the country to the rich heritage and culture of the District and the territories," the Delegate said.
"Whether it is to be General Buddhoe, the slave that led the effort that resulted in our emancipation, the three women who are best know for having led the Labor Revolt of 1878, or D. Hamilton Jackson, who was a judge, labor leader, champion of the free press or any number of people or monuments that represent who and what we are, that is to be decided," Delegate Christensen said. "We have begun the process and will be ready to join the states in this program," she said.
