'Page to Stage' Announces 2007 Season

Jan. 12, 2007 – From Page to Stage Inc. has announced its 2007 Main Stage production schedule. The season will kick off with "Bad Dates," a delightful romantic comedy by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Charles Braslow. Jeanne Johnston plays a single mother from Texas who encounters both love and the Romanian mafia in New York City. Performance dates are 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 25; and 8 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27.
"Bee-luther-hatchee," by Thomas Gibbons, is the theater's second offering. It is a fast-paced and beautiful play about "race and prejudice, outrage and good intentions, and, of course, the craft of writing, the world of publishing and the baggage of celebrity," says Carl A. Rossi of Theater Mirror. In this thought-provoking play, a young editor (Oceana James) publishes the memoir of a reclusive African-American woman. When she decides to seek out the author to deliver a writing award, what she finds is not what she expects. Others in the cast include Melody Harris and Allan Laberteaux. Performance dates for "Bee-luther-hatchee" are 7 p.m., Thursday, March 8; and 8 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10.
"Hate Mail," by Bill Corbett and Kira Obolensky, is the hysterically funny story of a spoiled rich kid and an angst-filled artist whose worlds collide when he writes a letter that gets her fired. Their increasingly crazed correspondence takes them from hate to love and back again. Performance dates are 7 p.m., Thursday, May 3; and 8 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5.
The last play of the 2007 Main Stage season is a contemporary version of Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth." "Bright Ideas," however, is a comedy, with the Macbeth role played by the wife and the Lady Macbeth role played by the husband. The playwright, Eric Coble, uses the dramatic structure of Shakespeare's play to ask: "How far would you go to get your child into the right preschool?" For Josh and Genevra, parents of three-year-old Mac, the sky seems to be the limit. "Bright Ideas" will be presented at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 11; and at 8 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13.
Coble will visit St. Croix for the production of his play, as part of From Page to Stage's commitment to bring at least one playwright to the island every year to talk to children about the craft of writing plays. From Page to Stage hopes to generate interest among our youth for creating their own plays. "We believe theatergoing is a good habit for every child to form, a fun activity that lasts a lifetime," says Jeanne Johnston, the theater's artistic director. "One of the best ways to get people into the theater for the first time is to show them theater that looks like them. Encouraging Crucian playwrights is therefore essential to our mission."
