Jan. 12, 2007 — Two minors initially held on burglary charges have been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of 24-year-old Jovan Joseph last week in Festival Village.
Police spokeswoman Shawna Richards said in a released statement Friday that investigators are also seeking a third suspect and are appealing to anyone with further information to contact police.
The stabbing occurred at 12:46 a.m. Sunday, bringing an otherwise violence-free Crucian Christmas Festival to a somber close.
The victim, an Anna's Hope resident, was attacked by what witnesses initially told police was a group of four men near the children's rides. Preliminary reports indicated the suspects may have attacked Joseph after he approached them about harassing his girlfriend. Joseph received a single stab wound to the body in the attack and was rushed to Luis Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Richards said that the two Hispanic minors, ages 15 and 16, were initially arrested in connection with their involvement in an attempted burglary in the Estate Calquohoun area on Thursday.
"Detectives assigned to the criminal bureau are also investigating the involvement of these suspects in the death of 24-year-old Jovan Joseph," Richards said. "Police are actively searching for a third suspect who fled the scene of the burglary. This suspect, a Hispanic male, is believed to have been involved in the stabbing."
Richards said that in addition to burglary and murder charges, the 16-year-old faces charges of contempt of court for curfew violation.
Both minors have been remanded to the Youth Rehabilitation Center.
