Jan. 9, 2007 — Two-time defending champion Seaborne Stealers, having lost an almost-unheard-of four games this season, got off to a winning start in 2007 with a Monday night pasting of Anchor Dive, 14-7, in the Bob Owens slow pitch softball league at D.C. Canegata Ballpark. The victory was twice as sweet for Seaborne as they avenged an early season loss to Anchor Dive.
Behind a strong pitching and hitting performance by ace Samuel Ramos, the Stealers scored early and never trailed. Batting first, the Stealers wasted little time in getting on the board as they came up with five runs in the top of the first inning to open the scoring for the game. The five runs came on a three-run home run off the bat of Enrique Soto, and RBI singles by Eustace Davis and Eric Flynn.
Anchor Dive answered back with two runs, on RBI singles by Fernando Irizarry and Carmelo Torres, to trail 5-2 after one inning.
The Stealers, sporting new uniforms for the New Year, were back on the attack in the top of the second as they once again came up with five runs, this time on a three-run homer off the bat of Guido Schjang and a two-run shot by Ronald Schjang to lead 10-2.
Anchor Dive came up empty in the bottom of the inning and would not threaten again until the bottom of the fifth.
The Stealers picked up another run in the top of the third on an error to extend its lead to 11-2.
After a scoreless fourth, the Stealers got two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Flynn to now lead 13-2. Anchor Dive answered with two solo shots by Danny Rosa and Edwin Rivera to trail 13-4 after five complete innings.
The Stealers added its final run of the game for a 14-4 lead in the top of the sixth on Guido Schjang’s second homer of the game, a solo shot to right center.
Anchor Dive rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run blast over the center field fence by Mario Simmonds to trail 14-7. It turned out to be the final score, as both teams posted goose eggs in the seventh.
Leading the way at the plate for the Stealers were Guido Schjang (3-for-4, with two home runs and four RBIs), Ronald Schjang (2-for-3, with a home run and two RBIs), and Soto (2-for-4, with a home run and three RBIs).
For Anchor Dive, Rivera was 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI, while Rosa and Irizarry were both 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Allan Woods got the loss for Anchor Dive.
