Brief: State of the Territory Address Set for Jan. 22

Jan. 9, 2007 — Three weeks after being sworn into office, Gov. John deJongh Jr. will deliver his first State of the Territory address on Monday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
During the address, before a formal session of the 27th Legislature, the chief executive will lay out his plan to address priority areas in the government during the first year of his administration. Themes that resonated during the campaign, such as crime, education, health care, and government reform will take prominent positions in the address, according to a Government House release.
“The annual State of the Territory address will afford me the opportunity to both report on the findings of the transition team, regarding the state of government, and clearly lay out my administration’s blueprint to correct the problem areas and chart a course for the future,” deJongh said Tuesday.
On Jan. 1, deJongh wrote to then Senate President-elect Usie R. Richards asking for the three-week delay in presenting the State of the Territory address. “I felt that coming off of the inaugural festivities, additional time was needed to meet with department and agency heads to assess where we are as a government and where we want to go as a unified territory,” deJongh added.
The State of the Territory address will be televised and broadcast live by local media outlets.
