Dec. 21, 2006 — Superior Court officials have launched an internal investigation after a man mistakenly released from custody died in a gunfight Monday Dec. 18 (See "Shootout Kills Fugitive Mistakenly Released From Jail").
Abawalda Petersen, 22, led Superior Court marshals on a chase from Tutu Park Mall to Hospital Ground on Monday morning, ending with his fatal shooting. The chase began when marshals attempted to serve a court order that would have returned Petersen to jail.
According to the release from V.I. Superior Court, the marshals have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation and have been referred to counseling.
