Children Eagerly Await Opening of Coney Island

Dec. 21, 2006 — Christmas is a time where everyone should get whatever they desire and topping the wish lists of many St. Croix children is the annual opening of Coney Island.
This year the most anticipated children's event begins with a specialty family package, allowing children of all ages to enjoy the rides all night long for only $10.
Coney Island will open at 6 p.m. Friday in Frederiksted near the ballpark. Admission into the park is free, and a few dollars would usually get you a ride. However, for the first day, parents and children will be allowed access to all the rides for a nominal price, according to Richard Nicks, Crucian Christmas Festival committee treasurer.
Tiny tots and older kids can experience the chills and thrills of classic rides like the tilt-a-whirl, the Ferris wheel and the merry-go-round. There are also games of chance and skill where you can win a life-sized stuffed animal or a smaller, but equally prized trinket.
Sweet treats like the candy apples, cotton candy and pizza slices will tempt the taste buds of the hundreds of people expected to visit the site during the Christmas season.
On Sunday a Christmas concert will be held in Buddhoe park in Frederiksted. St. Croix Big Band will start off the concert, followed by Dem Boys and a Girl.
The festival village will open on Tuesday Dec. 26 at 8 p.m. High Voltage band will take trampin' Crucians from the Frederiksted Post Office into the village, while Music in Motion dancers and Sparkle Lite Twirlers entertain residents on village grounds.
Nicks said Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Nights and 2005-2006 road march champions Stroka Band are also set to perform at the opening.
