Hurricane Hole Deadline Extended to Sunday

Dec. 12, 2006 — Boaters who put down ground tackle in St. John's Hurricane Hole for the duration of hurricane season have until Sunday to remove it, acting V.I. National Park Superintendent Walter J. Chavez said in a news release issued Monday.
When the park issued permits to boaters before the start of hurricane season, the removal date stood at Dec. 10. The new date gives boaters an extra week.
The park's resource management chief, Rafe Boulon, said Tuesday boaters got the extra week because he was late in getting out the press release.
Boulon said he doesn't know if any boaters still have ground tackle in place.
Any gear left in Hurricane Hole will be confiscated by park staff after Sunday.
Boaters who had space along the storm chain must reattach the marker buoy to the chain or return it to the park.
Boulon said there were 40 spots on the hurricane chain. He said he plans to reconfigure the spacing before next hurricane season to provide 45 spaces. And, he said that he expects another chain with 40 to 50 spaces to be in place before next hurricane season.
According to Boulon, around 110 boaters signed up for permits to put their boats in Hurricane Hole during a storm. Boulon said not all put their ground tackle down at the start of hurricane season.
"Some people decided to wait for an actual threat," he said.
