July 21, 2006 – With erosion control a hot topic on St. John and elsewhere, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – in collaboration with the St. John-based Island Green Building Association – will hold a free one-day workshop July 28 at the Westin Resort and Villas on St. John.
The workshop, "Storm Water Management and Erosion Control for Construction Sites," will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the resort's Coral Reef room, and said Sergio Bosques, an environmental engineer with EPA in Puerto Rico, will teach most of the workshop.
While the target audience is general contractors, consultants, developers, architects and staff at regulatory agencies, anyone interested in the topic is welcome.
"Lots of people in the construction industry seem to be blind to the fact that their activities do affect our water," said Keshema Abramsen-Webbe, a life scientist at EPA's St. Thomas office, on Friday.
The workshop focuses on EPA requirements under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Program as well as EPA and Planning and Natural Resources Department enforcement of the Clean Water Act at St. John construction sites.
Preregistration is not required; however, so that the EPA can plan for the event, the agency asks participants to let them know by Monday if they will attend. Call 714-2333.
