Summer Math and Science Academy Opens on St. Croix

July 5, 2006 – More than 100 people attended an orientation program for the six-week Mathematics and Environmental Science Academy (MESA) on Sunday, June 25, at the St. Croix Educational Complex auditorium. The program kicked off on Monday, June 26, 2006.
"The MESA Program serves secondary public school students and is broken into the junior high and senior high categories," said St. Croix Superintendent of Schools Cecelia Knowles. "One segment of the program is designed to serve incoming seventh and eighth grade students and will focus on algebra, physical science and communication skills. The other segment targets incoming ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students and focuses on small group of students working with a lead investigator and a student research assistant."
The program's culminating activity will be a presentation of research projects (paper and Power Point) of investigated issues and concerns related to air quality, alternative sources of energy, coastal zone management, drainage systems and solid waste management.
MESA is sponsored by the V.I. Department of Education in conjunction with Act. No. 6724, as sponsored by Sen. Usie R. Richards of the 26th Legislature of the Virgin Islands.
