June 28, 2006 – Police do not suspect foul play in two unrelated deaths reported this week.
On Sunday, police were called to Price Time market on Centerline Road in the Estate Concordia area to reports of an odor, Shawna Richards, police spokeswoman said.
When they arrived police found the body of an elderly man, thought to be in his 70s, in a building behind the store. "It appeared he had been there for a day or two," Richards said.
She could not say why he might have been in the building behind the store or exactly what he died from, though police are saying they expect it was "natural causes." She also could not release the name of the elderly man as his next of kin, she said, has not yet been notified.
On Tuesday morning, police were called to a two-story house in Christiansted, where they found the body of David Daum, 50, a New York native. Daum, who Richards said had lived on St. Croix for several years, appeared to have fallen off the balcony of his second-story apartment.
Richards said the investigation is ongoing and the exact cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed. Daum had face and head injures. Police are investigating whether alcohol may have played a part in Daum's death, Richards said.
