United Way International Elects First Virgin Islander to its Board

June 1, 2006 — Cornel Williams, Chief Financial Officer of International Capital and Management Company, has been elected to the board of United Way International.
UWI oversees special programs and initiatives which address unique needs and opportunities that transcend national borders. These include international giving programs for individual donors, companies and foundations that want to support UWI's global initiatives.
"Membership on the board … provides me with an opportunity to make a global impact," said Williams. "It's extremely rewarding to know that I'm helping to improve lives and communities around the world."
Since its inception over 30 years ago, UWI has been a leader in global philanthropy, supporting more than 1,200 organizations in 45 countries and territories outside the U.S., including the United Way of St. Thomas-St. John. These organizations consider the United Way brand as an attractive option to foster a climate of community giving to address the needs of local organizations that are delivering basic social services.
Williams brings eight years of experience as a volunteer, former board member and president of United Way St. Thomas-St John. "My experience with United Way STT-STJ will definitely serve me well in my new capacity as one of 25 board members from nine different countries," stated Williams. "I truly consider it an honor to be a part of such a dedicated and committed team."
Because of his unique background and professional experience, Williams has been appointed to sit on the UWI Finance and Management committee which provides oversight for finance, human resources, information technology, and management functions of the organization.
Mr. Williams holds a bachelor's in accounting from the University of the Virgin Islands and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Illinois. He also serves on several local boards and is very active in the community. Cornel is married to Lena Steele Williams.
