High School Essay Winners Take Home Nearly $20,000

May 22, 2006 – V.I. high school students – and their teachers – took home nearly $20,000 worth of prizes over the weekend in the annual Laws of Life essay contest.
Winners basked in the spotlight during ceremonies Saturday at Government House, Christiansted, and Sunday at St. Peter Great House Estate and Gardens, St. Thomas.
It was the sixth year for the contest, which is a joint effort by the Peter Gruber Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. Globalvest Management Company funds the contest.
Essentially a character education program, the Laws of Life is designed to get students thinking about their life values and expressing their thoughts in writing. English teachers present the program as part of their class work.
Separate contests were held this year in three public high schools: St. Croix Central, Ivanna Eudora Kean and Charlotte Amalie. And for the first time, ninth-grade students at St. John's Julius Sprauve School participated in the contest.
First place in each grade is $500, second place, $250, and third place, $150. Additionally, three students in each grade at each school receive honorable mention prizes of $50. Teachers of first- to third-place students also received cash awards of $250, $150 and $100 respectively.
Some of the first-place winners will appear on "Face to Face" on WTJX at 8 p.m. June 7.
