New Playwrights Circle Forms at Pistarckle

May 4, 2006 – Caribbean-based playwrights interested in having their unproduced plays read out loud have a new forum at Pistarckle Theater. A new Playwrights Circle will meet at 7 p.m. May 31 at the theater in Tillett Gardens on St. Thomas.
"People have been talking to us about plays they're writing," said Pistarckle Theater education director Bethany Burgess-Smith.
Some of those playwrights have said there's no forum for them to hear their works read by others, she said. "Sometimes hearing how an actor brings the words to life is exactly what the play need to move towards final development."
"We're also interested in knowing who our local artists are and hearing what they're writing about," Burgess-Smith said.
Local playwrights interested in receiving structured feedback on their works should submit plays to Pistarckle Theater no later than May 15.
Playwrights can send their work by mail to 6672 Estate Harmony, St. Thomas, VI 00802, or can drop off a copy of the play at the theater.
Actors who are interested in participating (with one evening of rehearsal before the event) should call the theater at 775-7877.
The Playwright's Circle will use Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process. The process uses a structured format for new discussion to maximize benefits for the audience and the playwright.
"It keeps the artist from hearing things that they already know are a problem, and instead directs the discussion to what the artist needs to hear about their play," Burgess-Smith said. "Good questions lead to better creative discovery."
The suggested donation to this new project is $5. The event is open to the public.
