Registration Underway for Master of Arts in Math Education

April 20, 2006 – The University of the Virgin Islands has begun registering students who intend to pursue a master of arts in mathematics education for secondary teachers. The degree is a three-year cohort program developed by UVI in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Department of Education and the V.I. Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).
Summer classes, with the first cohort of approximately 16 students, will be held on UVI's St. Croix campus beginning June 19 and ending July 28, 2006. Individuals who are not V.I. teachers may apply for admission to the program. The program will be offered in cohorts, with a new cohort beginning approximately every three years. Classes may be given on alternate UVI campuses during the summer, and video-conferencing will be used during fall and spring semesters when appropriate. To participate in this year's cohort applications must be complete and submitted by June 1.
In order to satisfactorily complete the program, students must complete a minimum of 36 credits, including a major paper based on classroom "action research."
To apply, please contact the UVI Admissions Office at 693-1150 on St. Thomas or the UVI Office of Academic Services at 692-4158 on St. Croix.

Limited funding may still be available to V.I. teachers. They should contact the Division of Human Resources for the V.I. Department of Education. Since this program is designated as aid-eligible, applicants are eligible for Stafford loans of up to $8,500 per year. For further information about obtaining loans, contact the UVI Financial Aid Office at 693-1090.
For general information about the math education program, contact Vanere Goodwin in the Division of Science and Mathematics at 692-4116.
