UVI Service Awards Set for April 19 and 20
The University of the Virgin Islands will recognize 77 employees during the 32nd annual Service Awards presentations scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, 2006, on the St. Croix campus and for Thursday, April 20, 2006, on the St. Thomas campus. The University extends an invitation to the Virgin Islands community to join in paying tribute to these dedicated employees. A news release is available on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.
UVI Carnival Troupe Practice Continues
All members of the UVI 2006 Carnival Troupe are asked to attend practices that are scheduled at 8 p.m. on Thursdays in the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion, and at 8 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays at the Recreation Center on the Golf Course. For more information, call 693-1672. The troupe's costumes can be viewed online from the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.
Online Registration for Summer Sessions, Fall Semester Now Available
Online registration for UVI's Summer Sessions I and II and for continuing students in the 2006 Fall Semester is underway. Class schedules and detailed registration information is available from the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
Summer Session English and Math Placement Test Schedules Announced
UVI has announced that English and mathematics placement tests in connection with 2006 Summer Session will be offered as follows:
— St. Thomas Campus:
English Placement — Tuesday, May 9, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Sports and Fitness Center room 222;
Math Placement — Wednesday, May 10 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Classroom Administration Building room 302.
— St. Croix Campus:
English Placement — Tuesday, May 9, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Evans Center room 305;
Math Placement — Wednesday, May 10, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Evans Center room 308.
St. Thomas Campus Observing Student Employment Appreciation Week
A week of activities designed to show appreciation to UVI's student employees is underway on the University's St. Thomas campus. The effort, sponsored by the UVI Counseling and Placement Office, will include appreciation and career focus days, a career development workshop, a "surprise" day, a meeting for supervisors of student employees and an awards ceremony. "Ethics in the Workplace" will be the topic of the career development workshop scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, in Chase Auditorium (B-110). The supervisors' meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, in Business room 101. The week concludes with an awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21, in the Dining Pavilion. St. Croix Campus Sets Student Awards Program for April 22
The 32nd annual Student Awards Program at UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The presentations will take place in the Cafetorium. For more information call Joyce Edwards-Hobson 692-4110.
5th Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival Set for April 22 through May 22
The Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds will celebrate the 5th Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival from April 22 through May 22, with several activities to be held on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The festival is designed to increase public awareness of the region's high endemism and rich bird life, according to UVI Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Jim Corven.
Activities will include talks, nature and birdwatching walks, photographic exhibitions, art competitions, the launch of endemic bird postal stamps, and the distribution of educational materials in schools and to the public. A one-week bird identification competition – titled "Birdwatching the Best Birds" – is planned for school children and adults on St. Thomas. Registration and information about this and other events will be available at a Pro-Enviro Fair on Friday, April 21, and at a "Birding for Beginners" session on Saturday, April 22.
Planned activities on St. Thomas include the following:
— April 21 — 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Second Annual Pro-Enviro Fair at the UVI Sports & Fitness Center. Fair includes registration for "Birdwatching the Best Birds."
— April 21 — 7 p.m.: Free movie "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," at the UVI Sports & Fitness room 222.
— April 22 — 8 to 10 a.m. "Birding for Beginners" at the UVI MacLean Marine Science Center.
— April 22 — 7 p.m.: Free movie "March of the Penguins" at UVI Chase (B-110) Auditorium.
— May 6 — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Submission of checklists and award of premiums for "Birdwatching the Best Birds," UVI location to be announced.
UVI Music Area Plans St. Thomas Campus Student Recital on April 23
The University of the Virgin Islands Humanities and Social Sciences Division Music Area will present a student recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, in the Music Building on the St. Thomas campus. Performances will be presented by music majors and music lovers. The UVI Steel Pan Ensemble and the UVI Concert Choir will also appear on the program. All are welcome. Admission is free.
Volunteer Ushers Sought for UVI's St. Thomas Campus Commencement
The Commencement Committee on UVI's St. Thomas campus is seeking volunteer ushers for the University's 42nd commencement exercise scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, May 15, at the Sports and Fitness Center. Interested persons should contact LeRue Brown at 693-1566 or Pam Sanes at 693-1550.
Seminar on Deployed Guard/Reserve Employees Set for April 18
A seminar titled "When Your Employee is Deployed" will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 18, at the UVI Small Business Development Center's (SBDC) Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The seminar is sponsored by the SBDC in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves (ESGR), a department of the U.S. Department of Defense. Emmett Hansen II, executive director of ESGR in the Virgin Islands, will be the presenter. He will cover employer and employee requirements, lengths of deployment and notification standards. UVI Accounting Association Announces Raffle Winners
The St. Thomas campus UVI Accounting Association has announced its spring 2006 raffle winners. Winners, drawn on Monday, April 10, were:
Jerome Whyte — first prize: a weekend for two at the Carib Beach Resort
Kishma Freeman — second prize: two tickets to any Reichhold Center show
Lorin Lewis — third prize: a gift set from the A.H. Riise perfume shop
'Indulgence' Wins UVI/Tom Joyner Talent Show on St. Croix
Russell "Indulgence" Thomas was selected by the audience as champion of the 2006 UVI Apollo-Style Talent Show held March 31 on the St. Croix campus. Thomas was among six formal contestants and several other performers joining in the UVI/Tom Joyner School of the Month fund-raising program. A sophomore Computer Science major, Thomas won the show's cash prize with his a cappella rendition of "I Wanna Know." Other contestants included William "Spike" Davis-McKean, Jael "Empress Jay" Browne, Archie Corbitt III, Capt. Garett "Big Easy" Bell and "2 Hot 2 Handle" consisting of Ebony Odom, Evonette Nathaniel and Lydia Gomes. UVI Students Excel in Tae Kwon Do Tournament
Three students from the UVI Tae Kwon Do Club competed in the Battle at the Beach International Open Martial Arts Tournament held March 25-26 at Good Hope School on St.
Croix. The competition included students and instructors from five Caribbean islands and North Carolina. The UVI students represented the St. Croix Martial Arts Center at the tournament.
Club members Janne Pierre won first place for sparring, while Noel Burnett came in second for sparring. Pierre and Burnett, both white belts, also earned second place for forms. Club member Erickson Thomas, a green belt, earned a first place for sparring and a second place for forms. The three took home six of the 18 trophies won at the tournament by students and instructors from the St. Croix center. Students of the UVI Tae Kwon Do Club are trained by Master Chief Instructor Evworth Charles.
