Michael F. Cabacungan Dead at 59

March 23, 2006 — Michael F. Cabacungan, 59, died Wednesday, March 22, after a valiant fight against cancer.
Born in New York City, he began visiting St. Thomas in the late 1960s; he moved to the island in 1985 where he has been co-owner and operator of Jan Michael's Hair Studio ever since. He embraced island life with an infectious enthusiasm. He was extremely active in many community organizations and the consummate volunteer for a host of charitable events over the years. He was especially active in United Way and Rotary and was a past president of Rotary.
He is survived by his life companion and partner of 41 years, Jan Beuker of St. Thomas; son, Michael Cabacungan; mother Eloise Smith; sister Jeanette Veney, brothers Tony, Teddy and Jimmy Cabacungan and nephew Gerald Veney, all of New York.
Arrangements are pending for a memorial Celebration of Life on St. Thomas. In lieu of flowers, donations to charitable organizations are appreciated.
