UVI Celebrating 44th Anniversary with Charter Week Activities
The University of the Virgin Islands celebrates its 44th anniversary with annual Charter Week activities beginning today – Monday, March 13. Included are lectures, presentations, sports competitions, the annual Queen Mary Walk/Run, a talent show and a research symposium. The official Charter Day Ceremony is set for 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, in Chase Auditorium (B 110) on the St. Thomas campus, with a videoconferenced link to the Theater (EC 401) on the St. Croix campus. MBA Exam Scheduled March 17 at UVI
UVI's Business Administration Division will offer the MBA Comprehensive Examination from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17. It will be offered in room 222 of the Sports & Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. On the St. Croix campus the test location is Room U-105. For more information, call 693-1300.
Virgin Islands EPSCoR Program Announces Incubator Grant Competition
The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) has announced a competition for incubator grants for new research on the bio-complexity of Caribbean coral reefs. The grants, which can be funded up to $25,000, can support pilot research, proposal development and other activities to advance research to the point at which it can attract major funding. Project Co-Director Dr. Meri Whitaker encourages members of the Virgin Islands community, such as those in resource agencies and fisherman's associations, to explore the possibilities these grants offer. Proposals must be received by March 15. Details on the types of research that will be considered and information on how to apply are available on the VI-EPSCoR website at http://epscor.uvi.edu. Childhood Obesity Conference Scheduled March 16 on St. Thomas
A program titled "Confronting Childhood Obesity Through Education" is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 16, by the Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service. Presenters include nutritionist Letitia Henry, Ph.D., RRD, and Jerrie Hawley, head nurse at the V.I. Health Department's office of Maternal Child Health. The program, which is free, will explore topics such as the causes of childhood obesity, helping overweight children, prevention of childhood obesity, fun physical activities and parental involvement. The session will take place at the UVI-Small Business Development Center's Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Although free, pre-registration is required. CLEP Exams Scheduled for UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas Campuses
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests will be offered on UVI's St. Croix campus on March 16 and 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Evans Center room 304. For details call 692-4103. The tests will be offered on the St. Thomas campus on March 23 in Classroom Administration Building room 103 (the computer lab) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 693-1220. CLEP tests allow students to earn college credit in a variety of subject areas. St. Croix Golden Key Chapter Elects New Officers
The St. Croix Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society conducted elections on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006. The following students were elected: Lucy Andreina Nunez — president-elect; Rachel Hamilton-Francis — vice president elect; Fern S. Green — secretary-elect; Narissa Mapp — treasurer-elect; Judy N. Charles — historian-elect; and Priscilla Roldan — public relations officer-elect. Induction of the new leaders is scheduled for April 23. St. Croix campus Golden Key advisors are Claude Steele, associate campus administrator for student affairs, and Francisco Depusoir, associate professor of accounting.
Planning Sessions for Woodworking Expos Set on March 19 and 20
Planning meetings for individuals interested in participating in woodworking expositions on St. Thomas and St. Croix are being organized by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service. St. Thomas-based wood workers, wood carvers and others who produce art or craft in wood are invited to a planning session at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, in the New House (Cooperative Extension) Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. A second planning session for individuals on St. Croix is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 20, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Free Course on Clothing Construction to be Offered on St. Croix Campus
A free Beginner's Clothing Construction Class will be offered on UVI's St. Croix campus from March 20 through May 10. The course, under the auspices of the Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. St. Croix Student Chapter of NABA Sets Conference for March 24-25
The St. Croix Student Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) will conduct its 2006 NABA Conference on March 24 and 25 in the Melvin Evans Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. "Challenges & Opportunities in the Quest for Sound Financial Reporting" is the conference theme. NABA members, as well as interested students, faculty and staff, and accounting professionals are invited to participate. Friday's sessions are planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturday, sessions will run from 9 a.m. to noon. The conference concludes with a gala awards ceremony at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Hibiscus Beach Hotel. The registration deadline is Thursday, March 23. St. Croix Campus Spring Ball Set for March 25
UVI's St. Croix Campus annual Spring Ball will be held on Saturday, March 25. The evening's theme is "A Night of Elegance and Beauty in Paris." The ball, which will be held in the Cafetorium, is open to UVI students, faculty and staff. Tickets are $25 per person and are available in the Residence Hall. Talent Show Scheduled on UVI's St. Croix Campus for March 31
A Tom Joyner School of the Month fundraising talent show will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 31, in the UVI Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The show is open to the VI community. Admission is $3. Performers for the show are being sought. To be eligible, individuals must be a UVI student or employee and have a talent. The registration deadline is Tuesday, March 21.
