March 10, 2006 – Chairman of the Committee on Education, and Culture and Youth, Senator Shawn-Michael Malone, extends his best wishes to the students in the territory as they prepare to take the VITAL (Virgin Islands Territorial Assessment on Learning) standardized tests that are scheduled to take place from March 13-17, 2006. The examination, which incorporates curriculum from the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) tests the performance of students from 2nd to 11th grade to determine the academic productivity of their reading and comprehension skills. Historically, the performance of the Virgin Islands students rank among the lowest in the country on standardized tests.
"I wish the students in the territory the best of luck as they take ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) next week. Next week of testing should be taken seriously by all parents and I am encouraging all parents and guardians to make sure that their children eat a balanced meal and get a good night's sleep prior to taking these tests. Studies have shown that students, who adhere to such principles, score higher on aptitude test. I am also imploring all adults within the Virgin Islands community to encourage our youth to make reading a habit to help develop comprehension and writing skills that are imperative to future success. My "Who Wants To Be A Readinaire" Book Club Program, which is in its third academic school year, has proven to assist children in increasing their reading skills and overall interest in reading," Senator Malone explained.
"My goal for this program is to see whether or not reading will also improve our children's ability to perform better on national standardized tests. Through this initiative, we can get a better understanding of not only our progress, but what measures are necessary to ensure that we do not fall short of the high academic standards that we have set for ourselves," Senator Malone concluded.
