Preliminary Race Results: Day One, Saturday, February 18

Feb. 19, 2006 – Under spectacular blue skies, 66 boats graced the waters off St. Croix's east end on Saturday, the first day of racing for this year's International Regatta and Valentine Optimist Regatta.
"We had absolutely perfect conditions – they couldn't have been any better," said Regatta Director Julie San Martin. Thirty-five boats hailing from St. Croix, St. Thomas, the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Antigua, St. Maarten and the United States participated today in the St. Croix Yacht Club's 13th annual regatta for adult sailors, sponsored by Innovative Communication Corporation.
While adults raced in big boats, 31 sailors under age 16 from St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and the United States competed in the 3rd annual International Valentine Optimist Regatta held simultaneously inside the Teague Bay Reef.
Preliminary Day One results are as follows:
Spinnaker Racing: Leading in the Spinnaker Racing category after three races Saturday is Mistress Quickly, a Melges 24 skippered by Guy Eldridge from Tortola.
2nd place: Chippewa (Dave West – Bayfield, Wisconsin, U.S.A.)
3rd place: Sorceress (Morgan Dale – St. Croix)
Race Cruiser:
1st place: Pipe Dream (Peter Haycraft – Tortola, B.V.I.)
2nd place: Boomerang (Pat Nolan – Tortota, B.V.I.)
3rd place: Tempest (John Haracivet – St. Thomas)
Cruiser
1st place: Shamrock V (Tom Mullen – Campton, New Hampshire, U.S.A.)
2nd place: Cayennita (Antonio Sanpere – St. Croix)
3rd place: Windflower (Stan Joines – St. Croix)

Large Multihull:
1st place: Piglet (Joe San Martin – St. Croix)
2nd place: Charis+ (Llewellyn Westerman – St. Croix)
3rd place: Chaos (Inglore Westerman – St. Croix)
Beach Cats:
1st place: Wave Magnet (Doug DeReu – St. Croix)
2nd place: Caribbean Auto Mart (Tom Ainger – St. Croix)
3rd place: Love Never Fails (Bruce Andry – St. Croix)
Results for five boats competing in the IC-24 class were still pending at 5:30 p.m.
St. Croix's regatta is the first event in the three-race CORT series (Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle) and will be followed later this season by racing in Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. Eighteen sailors have signed up to participate in all three races.
Big boat International Regatta racing continues tomorrow and Monday, starting at 10 a.m. each day. Awards for the International Regatta will be presented at 3 p.m., on Monday, Feb. 20, at the St. Croix Yacht Club.
Optimist Racing: This year's 3rd annual International Valentine Optimist Regatta saw a record of 31 sailors entering. Optimist participants under age 16, and hail from St. Thomas, St. Croix and Puerto Rico. Karen Stanton, primary race officer for the Optimist series, announced preliminary overall race results at the end of the first day. Joe Nigaglioni from Ponce, Puerto Rico led, sailing in the Red Fleet (sailors ages 13 to 15).
2nd place: Ramon Gonzalez (Puerto Rico)
3rd place: Raul Gios (Puerto Rico)
Optimist racing continues tomorrow, Feb. 19, in Teague Bay starting at 10 a.m., with awards presented at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
