'Mathletes' to Compete in District Mathcounts Program

Feb. 16, 2006 – Junior high and middle school student "mathletes" from St. Thomas and St. John schools will compete in the chapter competition of the national Mathcounts program. The event will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 8:30 a.m., at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel and is sponsored by the V.I. Department of Education and Rotary Club of St. Thomas.
There will be 58 students from district public and private schools that include: Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, Antilles, Sts. Peter and Paul, Montessori, Joseph Gomez, Ulla Muller, Leonard Dober Elementary, Peace Corps Elementary Schools and the Wesleyan Academy.
Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches covering algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. The four mathletes with the highest scores will advance to the State Mathcounts finals to be held on March 23, on St. Croix, according to a press release from the education department.
