Jan. 24, 2006 – The V.I. Waste Management Authority is on the hunt for manholes to be included on its sewer system map.
Authority engineer Alex Bruney said that the agency knows of over 2,000 manholes on St. Thomas. "And there's more out there," he said, adding that the agency needs to identify manhole locations so it knows where to send repair crews when there's a problem.
He said manholes on private property have easements to allow crews access.
"But lots of homeowners have put up fences and have dogs," he said, speaking about the barriers to mapping encountered by the mapping company.
Bruney said the WMA is also inspecting and videotaping manholes and sewer pipelines to determine where problems exist. He said those in the worst condition will get fixed first.
Elipse Consultants of St. Thomas, in conjunction with the Georgia-based Metals and Materials Engineers, are doing the mapping.
