American Sign Language Classes Offered by VIUCEDD
American Sign Language (ASL) classes will be offered on both St. Croix and St. Thomas from Monday, Feb. 27, through Friday, May 5, according to an announcement from the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). Students will be exposed to Level I: Part A of the ASL course.
A $130 registration fee covers the entire cost of the course. The deadline for registering is Friday, Feb. 17. For additional information, contact VIUCEDD on St. Croix at 692-1919 and on St. Thomas at 693-1189.
'Sweetness and Light' Seminar Set Wednesday, Jan. 25
A special seminar by University of California-Santa Cruz Chemistry Professor Bakthan Singaram is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at UVI. Prof. Singaram's topic is: Sweetness and Light: Continuous Glucose Sensing with a Fluorescent Thin-Film Hydrogel." It will be presented in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to room 401 in the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus.
The presentation will be of interest to a wide variety of students interested in biology, chemistry and medicine. Seminar on 'Whole Farm System Research' Scheduled Jan. 26
A seminar entitled "A Case Study Review of Whole Farm System Research in Bocas del Toro, Panama" is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, on UVI's St. Croix campus. The seminar will be conducted by Kate L. Povel, a candidate for a Research Specialist II position in Horticulture at UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. The seminar will emphasize the adoption and effectiveness of outreach to the local farming community as it relates to the whole farm system research. The seminar will be held in the Research and Extension Building, room 133. The public is invited. For more information, call 692-4020.
First Dateline: UVI of 2006 Now Available on UVI Web Site
The January 2006 edition of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI is now available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. The newsletter includes articles on the kickoff of a major UVI fundraising effort with the participation of the Tom Joyner Foundation and the appointment of a new Campus Executive Administrator on St. Croix.
St. Thomas Campus Media Center Relocated to Paiewonsky Library
The Media Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus has been relocated from the Teacher Education building to the Paiewonsky Library. The center is in room L-113. Official UVI ID photos, previously taken at the Media Center, are now taken at the library's circulation desk. For more information, call 693-1361.
Presentation on Woodturning Set Jan. 25 on St. Croix
A presentation on the craft of woodturning is scheduled for 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, in room 133 of the Research and Extension Building on UVI's St. Croix campus. The session will be presented by eight Virgin Islands artisans who attended the recent 19th Annual American Association of Woodturners Symposium in Kansas. Topics to be covered include: woodturning styles and techniques, wood collecting, tools of the trade, and the differences in and types of materials used in the Virgin Islands. Business Seminar for Craft, Food and Hobby Vendors Set Jan. 31
A business seminar titled "Turn Your Passion Into Profits" will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31. This is a Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training (WNET) seminar. It is sponsored by the New Image Foundation in collaboration with the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The seminar, which costs $10 with pre-registration or $15 at the door, will be held at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. It is part of a series designed to help individuals start their own small business ventures. The vendors of the "Traveling Road Show" will be featured, along with information on obtaining vendor licenses. For details or to register, call 777-8883. Everyone is welcome.
Reichhold Center Schedules Original Quelbe Production for Feb. 4
An original production – Playing Ring: A Musical Journey into Quelbe – is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Playing Ring, produced by the Reichhold, is designed to pay tribute to Quelbe, the official music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. A selection of "scratch" bands and quadrille dancers will be featured. St. Thomas/St. John Chapter UVI Alumni Association Sets Meeting for Feb. 9
A general meeting of the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. A social period will begin at 6 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:45 p.m. A discussion of association events for the upcoming year is on the agenda. For more information call 714-2795.
