St. John Residents Eager to View Lysistrata World Premier

Jan. 5, 2006 – Nearly three years ago, a group of St. John residents did a reading of the ancient Greek anti-war play Lysistrata. It was one of more than 1,000 performances of the play held on March 3, 2003, as part of a worldwide peace effort.
On Monday, the world premier of clips from some of those performances, entitled The Lysistrata Project, will air at the Bellevue Village Community Center on Gifft Hill Road (in the Bellevue Complex 7/10 of a mile from Centerline Road on the left, first building on right). It will start at 6:30 p.m.
"We don't know if we're in it," St. John resident Deanna Somerville said. She spearheaded the 2003 St. John effort and is organizing Monday's show.
Somerville said she's still looking for a big screen television, so if you have one to loan, contact her at 514-0914 or 776-6831.
The 2003 St. John performance was held at the Fish Trap Restaurant.
"We had 200 people attend," Somerville said.
She said that one of the worldwide readings occurred in Asheville, N.C., where her niece was part of the cast. "That was cool," she said.
Written by Aristophanes, Lysistrata tells the story of women from opposing states who unite to end a war by refusing to sleep with their husbands until the men agree to lay down their swords. Powerless in their society and distraught over too many of their children being slaughtered in battle, the women take the only tactic available to them: They withhold sex.
New York actors Kathryn Blume and Sharron Bower initiated the worldwide project.
Filmmaker Michael Patrick Kelly will be arriving on island Saturday and will be at the showing on Monday, according to Mikki Lipsey a co-sponsor of the St. John event.
The original website www.lysistrataproject.org lists all the countries and productions that were involved.
To view pictures of the St John event, some of which will appear in the documentary, according to Lipsey, go to www.untoldgood.com/steve/2003-03-03.
Monday's event will include a pot luck dinner starting at 6 p.m., also at the Bellevue Village Community Center.
