Force Main Break At Estate Cottage

Dec. 13, 2005–In the adjacent gut area of Estate Cottage there is a collapsed portion of the force main sewer line. According to a press release from the V.I. Waste Management Authority, the Authority and its contractor are evaluating the extent of the problem.
The 24-inch force main line transports sewage from Christiansted through the LBJ and Figtree pump stations to the Anguilla Wastewater Treatment Plant. The feeder pump station at Figtree has been turned off and sewage overflows have been diverted to the Figtree gut adjacent to the Hovensa facility.
The release, signed by May Adams Cornwall, executive director of the Authority, said all impacted areas are being deodorized and disinfected and this will continue until the problems are corrected.
Residents with weak immune systems are advised to avoid the area during this time as the sewage may contain contaminants that will negatively impact one's health.
