Unique Arts and Crafts Featured at Starving Artists Day

Nov. 25, 2005 — The big show that most islanders and visitors wait for to fill their holiday shopping lists opens Sunday at the Whim Museum.
The annual Christmas Starving Artist Day at the museum opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. Sunday. There shoppers will find unique island gifts from sea shell wreaths to moko jumbies and sea shell Christmas tree ornaments, island art, post cards and much more.
The St. Croix Landmarks Society hosts this annual fundraiser on the grounds of the historic Whim Museum in Frederiksted twice a year in August and November. This year more than 75 crafts persons will sell their one-of-a-kind hand-crafted goods.
"This is the big one," Sylvia Brady, Whim director of development, said on Friday. "Island artists wait for the Christmas show to bring out their best items for sale."
The show also features food and natural drinks, local plants and produce, children's activities and live local music. Need to get a Christmas rum cake or a pineapple or guava tart? How about some sugar cookies and old-fashioned peppermint sticks? Starving Artists is the place to stock up on all those holiday needs.
Vendors set up their wares on the lush lawns, under brightly colored tents or under the shade of a tree. Shoppers will see handcrafted jewelry, woodwork, ceramics and candles. Try a henna based temporary tattoo or let the kiddies get their face painted.
How about a CD of island sounds to keep for yourself or send to loved ones in the States? There will be plenty to choose from. Take a rest under cool boughs of an ancient tree and have some lunch or try one of the exotic flavors of homemade ice cream.
Also open Sunday will be the Whim bookstore. There are a variety of books written by local authors about the history of the Virgin Islands. While there, visitors are encouraged to sign up to be a member of the Landmarks Society or renew their memberships.
Admission to the Christmas Starving Artist Day is $5 for adults; kids are free. The location is # 52 Estate Whim, (located on Centerline Road – Rt. 70), in Frederiksted.
