UVI to Close for Thanksgiving Day and Fortsberg/Discovery Day; Finals Begin Dec. 1
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed Nov. 24 and 25 in observance of Thanksgiving Day and Fortsberg/Discovery Day. UVI classes will resume and administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedule on Monday, Nov. 28. The final exams for UVI's 2005 Fall Semester are scheduled from Thursday, Dec. 1, through Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Fall Semester ends on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
UVI Trustees Honor President Emeritus Dr. Orville Kean
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees held its quarterly meeting Saturday, Nov. 19, on the St. Thomas campus. During the session Board Chair Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel Jr. presented UVI President Emeritus Dr. Orville Kean with a proclamation and a plaque recognizing his more than 36 years of service to the University. UVI Spring '06 Online Registration Extended Through Dec. 16
Online registration for UVI's 2006 Spring Semester has been extended through Dec. 16. This applies to online registration only. Students are reminded that the enrollment process is not completed until final payment for courses and fees is made. Dec. 20, 2005, is the deadline for payment for Spring Semester courses. Class schedules and detailed enrollment information are available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. The online registration page is available from this link.
Paradise Jam Women's Division Action Begins on Thanksgiving Day
The national television cameras return to the Sports and Fitness Center court on Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, Nov. 24 – for two opening-round games in the Paradise Jam women's division. Those matches will feature the nation's top-ranked Lady Vols of the University of Tennessee against Michigan State and Maryland against Gonzaga. Women's division games continue through Nov. 26.
Paradise Jam Tickets; On-going Online Coverage
Paradise Jam tickets for V.I. residents are available from Modern Music in Havensight, The Rack in Tutu Park Mall, Parrot Fish on Backstreet and the UVI Bookstore. Tickets for V.I. residents are $10 per day for adults and $5 per day for students. Ticket's for V.I. residents will also be available at the door. Tickets for non-Virgin Islands residents are only available at the door. They are $25 per day, $40 for a two-day pass and $50 for a three day pass. Ninth V.I. Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference Opens Nov. 28
The 9th Virgin Islands Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference opens Monday, Nov. 28 and continues through Nov. 30 on St. John. UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Conservation Data Center and Marine Advisory Service are among conference sponsors. Issues on the agenda include watershed and coastal management, government initiatives, low-impact development, land use, and education and outreach. UVI Concert Band to Present First Christmas Concert on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands Concert Band will perform its first Christmas Concert on St. Croix over the Thanksgiving weekend. The 18-member band and its director Prof. Austin A. Venzen will present "A Crucian Christmas Spirit." A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
UVI Christmas Concert Scheduled Dec. 3 at Reichhold Center
The Annual UVI Christmas Concert, staged by the Music Program of UVI's Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. The program will feature the UVI Concert Band, under the direction of Prof. Austin A. Venzen, the UVI Concert Choir, under the direction of Kirsten Kienberger, and the UVI Jazz Ensemble, directed by Prof. Martin J. Lamkin. Shenelle Warner will direct the Steel Pan Ensemble. Special guests will include UVI alum Malvern Gumbs, who now teaches in the public school system, and the Anacrusis Brass Quintet, headed by Prof. Martin Lamkin. Joining Prof. Lamkin in the quintet are Juan Harrigan, Clayton Emmanuel, Dr. Leroy Trotman and Warren Hendrickson. UVI Prof. Dr. Lorna Young-Wright will accompany the choir on piano. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. They may be purchased at the Dockside Bookstore in the Havensight Mall, the UVI Bookstore and the UVI Humanities Division office.
More Than 1,500 in V.I. Visit UVI's Starlab
UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics introduced more than 1,500 Virgin Islanders to its new Starlab mobile planetarium last week in sessions on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. Some 1,223 students and teachers from the territory's schools were given special tours. Sessions for the general public were held on Nov. 13 on St. Croix and Nov. 19 on St. Thomas. The purchase of Starlab was made possible by funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation.
St. Thomas/St. John Ag Fair Announces 2005 Fair Winners

All Invited to Discussion 'UVI Learning Environments' on Nov. 28
UVI's Information Technology Services will conduct an open, group discussion addressing "UVI Learning Environments" from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Nov. 28. Learning environments are any space used by students in the learning process. UVI is preparing an assessment of its learning environments, based on comments and concerns expressed by students, faculty and staff. All input is critical. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. Input is sought on what is important and what needs to be changed or fixed in UVI's learning environments. The session will take place in Teacher Education room 101 (T-101) on the St. Thomas campus and in Evans Center room 713 (EC-713) on the St. Croix campus. Opportunities Available as Alternate Language Teachers in Japan
University seniors who expect to graduate in the spring of 2006 are advised that they may apply for an opportunity to work in Japan as alternate language (English) teachers at high schools in the country. The opportunity is available through the Virgin Islands Cultural Exchange program in cooperation with the Japanese Consulate General in New York. Available positions pay from $33,000 to $35,000 per year. To qualify, students must be U.S. citizens, be a college graduate and speak and write standard English well. Contracts are normally renewable three times. The deadline to apply is November 29, 2005. Interested individuals can obtain the necessary appli
cation forms and information from UVI business professor Dr. Keishiro Matsumoto. Dr. Matsumoto urges interested persons to apply as soon as possible. UVI St. Thomas Bookstore Offers Sale on Clothing
The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus is offering a 40 to 60% off sale on selected items of clothing. The sale will continue through Dec. 10.
Applications Extended for Who's Who Among Students Until Dec. 1
The Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges application process on the St. Croix campus has been extended until Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005. Applications are available from Monday through Friday in Evans Center room 802 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and in Evans Center room 811 from Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For additional information contact Claude Steele at 692-4181.
UVI MBA Comprehensive Exam Rescheduled for Dec. 9
UVI's MBA Comprehensive Exam, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18, has been rescheduled for Friday, Dec. 9. The exam will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center on St.Thomas and in the Research Extension Building room 139 on the St. Croix campus.
