Nov. 17, 2005 –– St. John was abuzz Thursday after the Internal Revenue Service conducted a raid at the Beach Bar. The bar is located on beachfront at Wharfside Village in Cruz Bay.
However, the IRS isn't talking.
"The matter is under seal and cannot be discussed," spokesman Eldria Michaud said from the IRS office in Florida.
She declined to name the person involved or provide any other information.
She confirmed that federal IRS agents did conduct a raid at the Beach Bar.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police department spokesman, said police officers were also involved. He said that the IRS "executed a warrant."
Neighbors had a few things to add.
"The police blocked the road in front of the rental car and next to the church," St. John Car Rental owner Albert Willis said.
He said the road was blocked for quite a while.
Willis said he heard a helicopter flying around, but said it never landed. Other people who work at neighboring businesses also reported hearing the helicopter fly overhead.
Jesse Hill, who works at Low Key Watersports at Wharfside Village, which is adjacent to the Beach Bar, said he saw about 15 IRS agents on the scene.
"They were here for quite a few hours," he said.
He said after they left, the Beach Bar opened up. However, no one answered the phone Thursday afternoon.
A check at Licensing and Consumer Affairs did not turn up any business called Beach Bar so the name of the owner could not be confirmed.
