Saturday Night Murder at Shanty at Campo Rico

Nov. 13, 2005 –The V.I.Police Department investigation continued Sunday into a fatal shooting in Frederiksted Saturday evening. The victim was shot to death as he sat with other individuals near the Campo Rico shanty, according to Deputy Police Chief Herminio Velazquez.
Police were called to reports of shots fired and "when they got to the area, they found the victim sitting in an upright position bleeding from the head." Velazquez said late Saturday night. The victim who had no vital signs at the scene suffered multiple gunshot injuries. Velazquez identified the victim as 30- year- old Steve Hart, a resident of the Marley housing community.
Velazquez speculated that Hart and several other people were cooking in the shanty and after the shooting, the other persons left the area hurriedly.
"We found a coal pot and other items which suggested that some sort of cooking activity was going on in the shanty." It also appeared, Velazquez said that the victim was robbed.
An appeal was made to the residents of the Campo Rico community who may have witnessed the shooting to contact police at 778-4950 or emergency 911.
Police also continued the investigation this weekend into the death of a man whose body was found in a ditch near Estate Carlton on Queen Mary Highway.
Robert Santillana, 49, was a resident of Williams Delight. "It appeared that he died of injury to the head area," Velazquez said Saturday night. The case is being investigated as a homicide.Hart's death is the 39th killing in the territory in 2005.
