Nov. 6, 2005 – The Alton Augustus Adams Music Research Institute will present a free public lecture by Dr. Ivor Miller, the current Rockefeller Scholar in residence on St. Thomas, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.
Miller is a cultural historian specializing in the African Diaspora in the Caribbean and the Americas. He comes to the institute directly from extensive research in Cuba. He has written numerous articles and two books: "Ifa Will Mend Our Broken World: Thoughts on Yoruba Culture in West Africa and the Diaspora," coauthored with Wande Abimbola, and "Aerosol Kingdom: Subway Painters of New York City," emphasizing the effects migrating Caribbean people have had on New York.
Miller is the fifth scholar in residence at the Adams Institute. All have been conducting post-doctoral research in Caribbean countries.
The lecture will be held at the Chase Auditorium at the University of the Virgin Islands (room B-110 on the lower level of the business building on the upper St. Thomas campus.
The institute sponsors workshops, summits and forums, all designed to document the lives of important music and dance tradition bearers; demonstrate preservation and documentation techniques to V.I. residents interested in studying local cultural traditions; and provide professional development guidance for teachers. The institute publishes Cariso, a newsletter published twice a year, and provides support for researchers in its small resource center.
