Oct. 11, 2005 –– Don't look for any improvement in the rainy and cloudy weather until the weekend, National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Levine said from San Juan at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
"This is still part of the upper low spinning to the north of the islands," he said.
He said it's moving very slowly, but drawing moisture up from the south.
Levine said that between 7:35 a.m. Monday and the same time on Tuesday, 3.7 inches of rain fell at Bonne Resolution on St. Thomas. He said 2.33 inches fell at Turpentine Run.
He said that .07 inches fell at Guinea Gut in Bethany, St. John.
Levine had no figures for St. Croix.
He said that while some areas got lots of rain, others were drier.
"It's very hit or miss," he said.
V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency deputy director Steve Parris said that problem areas on St. Thomas include Santa Maria, where rockslides closed the road on Monday.
"It should be open now," he said.
Other areas had rockslides, but not to the point where the road was closed.
Flooding occurred at the Kirwan Terrace/Lindbergh Bay area; North Side's Crown Mountain Road west of Four Corners to the trash cans; near Addelita Cancryn School; at Lower Contant near Bellows International; at Paul M. Pearson housing community/Mandela Circle; and Brookman Road in Nadir and Bovoni.
Those areas were all passable Tuesday morning.
Parris said that when it rains, people should avoid those areas if possible.
"If you see water where you can't see the road, turn around," he said.
He said the road underneath the water could have washed out, which could leave the vehicle stuck in a hole. This could put the driver in danger.
On St. Croix, VITEMA deputy director Elroy Harrison said flooding occurred Monday at various points around the island. They included Gallows Bay; the Melvin Evans Highway, near Hibiscus Beach Hotel, Hannah's Rest, LaReine, Croixville, Grove Place, Mon Bijou, and Christiansted.
However, he said those areas are no longer flooded.
VITEMA's deputy director on St. John, Alvis Christian, said the island had no rockslides or flooding.
