74 Illegal Immigrants Hauled In

Sept. 4, 2005 – Three law enforcement agencies joined forces Saturday to intercept and detain a vessel carrying 74 illegal immigrants.
The VIPD, U.S. Coast Guard and Planning and Natural Resources enforcement officers intercepted the sail boat Lady Ashleigh Brett, east of Point Udall. It was carrying 44 men, 27 women and three children, according to a release from the Police Department. All but one of the illegal aliens were Haitians. The other was from the Dominican Republic, the release said.
The vessel was bearing a Canadian flag, but the port of registry was unknown, the release said.
The interception took place at 4 p.m. and the vessel was escorted to the Gallows Bay dock where emergency medical technicians were available to offer medical assistance. The release did not indicate if medical assistance was required.
The immigrants were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents, the release said.
