Sept. 1, 2005 –– Tropical Depression 14, which formed Thursday morning, won't pose a problem for the Virgin Islands, but meteorologist Hector Rivera at the National Weather Service in San Juan gave residents a heads up on what's brewing off the west coast of Africa.
"There is a low pressure system that has some potential for development. This is a system you need to monitor," he said.
Noting that it's way too early to accurately predict its track and speed, Rivera said the system is moving west at about 12 mph. He said it should reach the region by Wednesday or Thursday.
He said given the fact that residents were getting ready to enjoy the long Labor Day weekend, it was especially important that they know the new system, which just formed, could become a problem.
The system doesn't yet have a center so the Weather Service can't provide coordinates as it does when a system develops into a tropical depression, tropical storm or a hurricane. However, Rivera said the system was located between 5.5 and 11 degrees north latitude and 30 and 34 degrees west longitude.
Tropical Depression 14 is already at a latitude north of the Virgin Islands. As of the 11 a.m. update, it was centered at 19 degrees north latitude and 46.1 degrees west longitude.
The storm has winds of 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph.
It is moving to the west-northwest at 16 mph.
The barometric pressure stands at 1008 millibars or 29.76 inches.
