Frederiksted Force Main Repaired

Aug. 30, 2005 – The sewage flow into the ocean off Frederiksted stopped Monday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Waste Management Authority, the repairs to the Lagoon Street force main were completed on Monday afternoon and the bypassing into the Pan Gut was discontinued at approximately 4:50 p.m. The break occurred Friday in the Pan Gut adjacent to the St. Patrick's School.
Due to the saturated conditions of the surrounding area, the pipe excavation and replacement was slowed down considerably.
"The bypass to the Gut was necessary to prevent overflow of the gravity sewers in the town of Frederiksted," said May Adams Cornwall, executive director of the WMA, in the press release. "However, we regret the closing of the beach and any inconveniences as a result of this bypass. Our sewer system evaluation indicates that the replacement of this force main is high priority and it has been included in our capital improvement plan."
She stated on the radio on Tuesday that work took longer because deteriorating pipe around the break was also replaced.
