News Brief: Property Tax Bills Delayed by Software Problems

Aug. 15, 2005 – Mailing of residential property tax bills, due out in June, have been delayed, Tax Assessor Roy Martin said Monday.
He said the problem lies at the Finance Department, which has not ironed out technical problems with new computer software put in place as part of the residential property revaluation program now underway.
"They're working on that," Martin said.
Finance Commissioner Bernice Turnbull did not return a phone call requesting more information.
Martin said his office has the bills all ready to be mailed, but the Finance Department will not be able to collect the payments until its technical problems are ironed out. He did not know when the bills would go out.
"We hope very shortly," he said.
He said that residential property tax bills are normally due to be paid by Aug. 31, but an extension will be granted. He said the extended due date has not yet been set.
Commercial property tax bills are also late going out, Martin said. Due for mailing in June, he said they're delayed because the U.S. District Court has to approve new procedures that came about as part of its ruling that forced revaluation of both commercial and residential properties.
He said commercial tax payers will also get an extension.
