The American Cancer Society Will Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings

Aug. 13, 2005 – The American Cancer Society will offer free skin cancer screenings in conjunction with the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute and Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas and Governor Juan Luis Hospital on St. Croix.
These free screenings will be available at the Schneider Regional Hospital Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 1-3 p.m. and at Gov. Juan Luis Hospital Monday, Aug. 22, from 2-4 p.m. A team of experts will also offer an educational seminar on "Protecting the Skin You're In" along with the screenings.
Dr. Shirnett Williamson, director of radiation oncology for the Kimelman Institute, will offer a seminar on the various signs to look for in detecting skin cancer. Dermatologist Dr. Carolyn Merritt of St. Croix and Dr. Fletcher Robinson of St. Thomas will provide their services for these skin cancer screenings.
"With the always and immediate exposure to direct sun light in the Virgin Islands, it is most important that we educate the public about taking care of your skin and the effects of skin cancer," said Dr. Williamson.
For appointments, please call 776-8311 ext. 4442 for both St. Thomas and St. Croix. For additional information, questions or assistance, please call the American Cancer Society at 775-5373 or acssttstj@yahoo.com.
