Caribbean Star/Sun Names New President

Aug. 11, 2005 – William E. "Skip" Barnette will be the new president and chief executive officer of Caribbean Star Airlines and Caribbean Sun Airlines on Sept. 1.
"Skip Barnette brings the precise qualifications needed to further accelerate Caribbean Star's and Caribbean Sun's already explosive growth and achieve our vision of becoming the world's best airline," R. Allen Stanford, board chairman, said in a news release issued Thursday.
The name of Barnette's predecessor was not available.
Stanford said Barnette consistently demonstrated the ability to build regional airline operations into efficient, high-quality performers in a difficult business environment by instilling a company-wide commitment to first-class customer service.
" We look forward to his repeating this performance at our airlines," Stanford said.
Barnette most recently served as president of Atlantic Southeast Airlines, a subsidiary of Delta Airlines.
Under Barnette's leadership, Atlantic Southeast Airlines grew from a company of less than 3,000 employees and 17 regional jets to one with more than 5,800 employees and a modern fleet of 139 planes.
Under his tenure, the number of flights cancelled due to maintenance problems fell from six percent to 0.4 percent. Its on-time arrivals went from 50 percent to nearly 80 percent.
Barnette started 35 years ago as a cargo handler for Delta. A wide range of operating and marketing assignments followed. He helped launch the airline's entry into the low-cost market with Delta Express in 1996. As managing director of the project, Barnette led a team that turned 24 aircraft into a functioning subsidiary airline in just six months.
Barnette said that Stanford and his team have done a tremendous job in establishing growth, strengthening management, making key investments in new facilities, equipment and training, and developing a team spirit among the airline's employees
Caribbean Star Airlines was incorporated in Antigua in January 2000. Its sister airline, Caribbean Sun Airlines, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., launched its maiden flight in January 2003. Together, the airlines serve 17 Caribbean destinations and transport over 80,000 passengers a month throughout the region.
Caribbean Sun and Caribbean Star operate out of Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix. Caribbean Sun has flights to San Juan. Caribbean Star flies from both St. Thomas and St. Croix to St. Vincent.
