June 24, 2005 – The Honorable Lorraine L. Berry, senate president extends her congratulations to the San Antonio Spurs and to the Virgin Islands own, Tim Duncan, for securing a third NBA title in seven years.
"I must commend Mr. Tim Duncan for, once again, being the glue that kept the San Antonio Spurs focused on the prize and taking them to the top position in the ranks of professional basketball. Tim Duncan continues to do us proud. He has exhibited a level of team spirit and selflessness that has enabled the San Antonio Spurs to seize, for the third time, the NBA's most coveted title –the NBA Championship," Berry said.
"Tim Duncan is the consummate team player, he is not a show-boater nor in love with the spot light. His aim is to win as a collective and subsequently share the spoils of his victories. The positive strides the Spurs have made in the past seven seasons are testament to his willingness to share the ball. This attitude is the reason why he was chosen as the MVP for the 2005 Finals, and in partnership with his excellent play, this is why he secured the Finals MVP trophy in 1999 and 2003. He is an inspiration to the youth of the Virgin Islands. He gives aspiring young players hope and something they can dream about but also bring that dream to reality if they put in the necessary hard work and discipline," she continued.
"It gives me great pleasure to recognize the outstanding accomplishments this young man has made in the arena of professional basketball, and it fills me with pride to recognize that he has not forgotten where he came from. The people of St. Croix can share in his glory and the Virgin Islands should be bursting with pride. We have more Tim Duncans walking in our midst. The Virgin Islands has a plethora of outstanding athletes. And we will do all that we can to grant them the opportunity to showcase their talents. Once again, congratulations, Tim Duncan," Sen. Berry concluded.
