Sen. Malone Postpones Senate Rules Meetings

June 13, 2005– Sen. Shawn-Michael Malone on Monday afternoon postponed three Senate Rules and Judiciary Committee meetings scheduled for this week.
The first one was to have been held Monday evening on St. John; the second, Tuesday evening on St. Croix; and the third on St. Thomas.
The meetings were to discuss two bills:
– Bill No. 26 0037 — To petition Congress to amend the Revised Organic Act of the Virgin Islands, to empower the Legislature, with the approval of the voters, to charter municipal governments on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix; to establish a Municipal Government Charter Commission, and to provide for a referendum on the charter of municipal governments on all three islands.
– Bill No. 26 0038 — To petition United States Congress to amend the Revised Organic Act in the Virgin Islands, title 48 U.S.C. section 1593 (b) (7) by lowering the number of voters for an initiative to take effect.
Malone said in a release that he postponed the meetings due to "many distractions which take away for the public's focus on these two far-reaching pieces of legislation." He said the public is too focused on graduation ceremonies right now.
He said a second reason for the postponements is "a meeting pertaining to the Water and Power Authority and Innovative was scheduled for today, as well."
Malone said copies of the legislation can be obtained at his office. Anyone wanting to testify at these meetings, he said, should contact Cheryl Hyndman, his legislative director, at 693-3536.
Malone apologized for any inconvenience the postponements may have caused.
