The Forum Presents 'Lost Embrace'

June 11, 2005 – The second film in the 2005 The Forum Film Festival will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Caribbean Cinemas at Market Square East. "Lost Embrace" is a 2004 Argentina-France-Italy-Spain co-production. It took the Silver Bear award at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival and was Argentina's Academy Award Best Foreign Film entry.
The story revolves around Ariel, a young man dealing with his heritage and his relationship with his estranged father, who left to fight the Yom Kippur war in 1973, when Ariel was barely a year old. Ariel's mother runs a lingerie shop in a Buenos Aires shopping mall, and his brother deals in the import-export business. It's a comfortable world, despite an undercurrent of malaise and uncertainty.
In the context of Jewish exile in Argentina – where his grandmother fled from Poland during the Nazi invasion – Ariel dreams of escaping his job at his mother's store and moving to Poland. Unable to avoid his anger towards his family, Ariel confronts his feelings toward his father, who never returned from Israel. The father-son void serves as a microcosm of the universal generation gap.
"Lost Embrace" presents an eccentric, multicultural ensemble of engaging characters who, with an Argentinian flair, seek humble dreams with humor, passion and generous spirits. Ariel's witty meditation on his Jewish identity and his overprotective, melodramatic mother are reminiscent of Woody Allen and Philip Roth.
Despite the film's preoccupation with Jewish themes, it celebrates multiculturalism through a Korean couple who run the feng shui boutique; Ramon, a Peruvian who works for Ariel's brother; and others, treating the proverbial "other" with tenderness and style.
The Forum's final film in the 2005 festival will be "Born Into Brothels" on June 22. From India, this documentary chronicles the lives of children born to Calcutta's prostitutes.
Tickets can be purchased for $15 at Reichhold at 693-1599; Modern Music, Nisky Center; Parrot Fish; Dock Side Bookshop; Interiors, Ft. Mylner; Home Again, Red Hook Plaza; and inside the cinema complex.
