Locally Available Scholarships 2005-2006

March 31, 2005 – Following are summaries of information provided to the Source by sponsoring organizations about scholarships currently available.
In some cases, more extensive articles also are posted. To access them, search at the bottom of this section of the Source using the key word "scholarship."
Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands
Donor organization: Seven entities, through the foundation.
Number of scholarships: Multiple scholarships. Last year CFVI made awards to 37 students.
Amount of scholarship: Ranges from $2,000 to full tuition.
Qualifications: Vary, dependent on the awarding entity. See the separate Source article in this section for more details on each of the seven announced scholarships.
Deadline: Postmarked by April 15, 2005
How/where to obtain an application:
— On St. Thomas, at The Draughting Shaft, Havensight Mall.
— On St. John, at Connections.
— On St. Croix at the offices of the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce.

Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship Program
Donor Organization: Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.
Number of Scholarships: Multiple Scholarships Available.
Amount of Scholarships: $60,000 for Bachelor's Degree, $20,000 for Associate Degree.
Qualifications: The applicants area of study must be within computer and technology or related fields.
Deadline: April 26, 2005
How/where to obtain applications:
— High School Guidance Counselor Offices.

Government Employees Retirement System
Donor organization: GERS Investment Managers, administered through the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
Number of scholarships: Up to three.
Amount of scholarships: Not announced.
Qualifications: Applicants must be the child, stepchild or legal dependent of a contributing member of GERS, be a graduating senior of a high school in the territory, and have a grade point average of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. All nominees must show financial need. Scholarships provide tuition support for students enrolled full-time in a program leading to the award of a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university.
Deadline: Postmarked by April 29, 2005.

Friends of the V.I. National Park
Donor organization: The Friends
Number of scholarships: Two
Amount of scholarship: $1,000, disbursed at $500 per semester.
Qualifications:
— Student entering the junior or senior year at an accredited university with a major in appropriate discipline relative to natural resource management or protection. Priority is given to Virgin Islanders studying at the University of the Virgin Islands.
— V.I. resident who completed high school in the Virgin Islands.
— Student who has completed all prerequisite coursework for majors in appropriate field and maintained a B average through the first three (for sophomores) or five (for juniors) semesters.
Deadline: April 30, 2005.

Sigma Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Donor organization: Sigma Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Number of scholarships: Not announced.
Amount of scholarships: $1000
Qualifications: a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (equivalent to a C+) or better, an essay of 400-500 words on the theme, "Reaching New Heights of service for Our Community, " letters of recommendations, and the evidence of leadership qualities. All applicants that meet the required criteria will be interviewed. The interviews are tentatively set for May 5 and May 6, 2005. Applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the interviews.

Robert C. Byrd Scholarship
Donor organization: Administered by the V.I. Department of Education.
Number of scholarships: One.
Amount of scholarship: $1,500 per year, renewable for four years.
Qualifications: The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship is a four-year scholarship for graduating students in the St. Thomas-St. John district who have been accepted to a college or university for attendance in the fall of 2005. Applicants must have a cumulative average of "C" or better.
Deadline: Monday, May 16, 5 p.m.
How/Where to obtain an application: Interested students can obtain applications from guidance counselors at public and private schools throughout the district, and the Curriculum Center in Estate Tutu.
Ruby Rutnik Scholarship
Donor organization: Ruby Rutnik Scholarship Fund, Inc.
Number of scholarships: Two Scholarships are available.
Amount of scholarship: $2,500 renewable scholarship for a St. John female. One-year $2,500 scholarship for a St. John male or female who is or will be studying at the University of the Virgin Islands.
Qualifications: The renewable scholarship is available only to a qualifying St. John female whose family or self has resided on St. John for five years or more. The one-year scholarship is available to a St. John male or female who is or will be studying at the University of the Virgin Islands.
Deadline: May 5, 2005

Notice will be given on or before June 15, 2005.
St. Thomas Board of Realtors Scholarship
Donor Organization: St. Thomas Board of Realtors.
Number of Scholarships: Two.
Amount of Scholarship: $2,000.
Qualifications: The St. Thomas Board of Realtors will be awarding a $2,000 scholarship to two college bound high school seniors from St. Thomas. This year's essay theme is as follows: "The Land and Water Use Plan that will determine how our Islands will look in the future is once again under consideration. As young Virgin Islanders, write an essay on how you would like St. Thomas to develop for future generations." Successful candidates will be notified by June 10, 2005 and awarded scholarships at the St. Thomas Board of Realtors' General Meeting on June 17, 2005.
Deadline: Application and essay must be turned in by May 31, 2005.

Humane Society of St. Thomas Scholarship
Donor Organization: Clearwater Consulting Solutions.
Number of Scholarships: Four.
Amount of Scholarship: Each scholarship is worth $1,000
Qualifications: Eligible applicants must be residents of St. Thomas and complete a 500-word essay on the link between animal and child abuse, and how people can prevent, recognize and react responsibly to animal cruelty. The scholarships are open to college-bound high school seniors and students at the University of the Virgin Islands who intend to pursue a career in an animal-related field.
Deadline: Must be submitted by June 30.
How/Where to obtain an application: Application forms may be emailed to students upon request and are available at the Humane Society's
website, www.humanesocietyofstthomas.com, or they may be picked up at the Humane Society located at 7041 Estate Nadir, #26 on St. Thomas. Applications may also be requested via mail by calling the Humane Society at 775-0599. Completed applications must be submitted by June 30, 2005 to the Scholarship Committee, Humane Society of St. Thomas, 7041 Estate Nadir #26, St. Thomas, VI 00802. The successful candidate will be notified no later than July 20, 2005.
Presidential Freedom Scholarship
Donor organization: Corporation for National and Community Service.
Number of scholarships: Two available to students across the territory.
Amount of scholarship: $1,000.
Qualifications: Nominations are open to high school juniors or seniors during the 2004-2005 academic year. The scholarship program provides $500 of the award, which must be matched with at least $500 from a community organization, civic group, or business. Students who complete at least 100 hours of community service, either through a school-based service-learning program, or independently through service at a nonprofit or faith-based organization, are eligible to receive the scholarship.
Deadline: Postmarked by July 1, 2005.
