Four Local Ad Club Members Take Gold and Silver ADDY Competition

May 17, 2005 –– Four members of the Advertising Club of the Virgin Islands captured five ADDY awards Saturday at the American Advertising Federation's Fourth District meeting in Orlando.
MLB Creative of St. Thomas won a gold and a silver. Photographer Gary Felton and Austin Advertising, both of St. Thomas, as well as Kate N Design Inc. of St. John all took silvers.
MLB Creative won the gold in the menu design category for their blue moon wine tasting menu.
"We're thrilled. It's an amazing feather in our cap," Terri Brown, MLB Creative Caribbean manager, said Tuesday.
Brown said the agency designed an oversized menu with illustrations of people drinking wine. She said it was for a Duck Pond Cellars wine tasting event at Secret Harbour Beach Resort's Blue Moon Cafe sponsored by West Indies Corp.
The company's silver in the packaging category was for the lucky dog cookie labels for the Humane Society of St. Thomas. Brown said that entry also captured the best of show in the Virgin Islands competition.
Felton won the silver in the photography category for a shot he did for Allura Charters. The catamaran was anchored at Christmas Cove. To get the job done, Felton had to climb up the mask and shoot from above.
"It did the job it was designed to do," he said Tuesday.
Austin Advertising won a silver for cinematography in an ad for Guardian Insurance Co. Owner Brian Squires could not be reached for comment.
Kate Norfleet, who owns Kate N Design, won a silver in the brochure category for her running brochure for the Westin Resort and Villas.
"It's a small die cut in the shape of a water bottle that has a map of where guests can safely run," she said.
She said winning the award was an incentive to reach for even greater professionalism in her work.
The St. Thomas and St. John entries, which all captured gold or silver awards at the local level, were among the 1,700 entries submitted by 18 advertising clubs in the Florida/Caribbean region.
"It's huge," club president Bob Austin said.
There were a total of 61 entries from members of the Advertising Club of the Virgin Islands.
Brown said that the district competition had more than 80 categories of awards. The winners from the Virgin Islands joined the likes of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Volkswagen, Ritz Carlton, and American Airlines on the winners list.
All the Fourth District winners went on to the national competition. The winners will be announced in Washington, D.C. in June. Austin said none of the Virgin Islands entries won.
