Restrictions Placed on Sale of Alcohol on Good Friday

March 22, 2005 – Good Friday is celebrated differently then St. Patrick's Day on the Virgin Islands. Alcohol does not rule.
Police Commissioner Elton Lewis sent a press release Monday listing restrictions regarding the serving of liquor on Good Friday.
He said the V.I. Code bans the serving of alcoholic refreshment in public places between
9 a.m. and 4 p.m., on Good Friday.
This law includes fermented liquors, such as fermented beer, larger beer, ale, porter, liquor, wine or any beverage containing more than one percent of alcohol by volume.Lewis said it is the responsibility of all owners who dispense alcoholic beverages and liquor to adhere to this law in respect for the religious holiday.
Any person found violating this restriction can be fined up to $200 and imprisoned for not more than one year, or both.
In his release, Lewis also reminded business owners that anyone under 18 is not allow to enter a night club or bar where alcohol is served after 9 p.m. unless accompanied by an adult, legally responsible for the minor.
Violation of this law is a misdemeanor and the establishment owner may be fined not less than $25 and not more than $500 for each minor found on the premises and/or jailed for not more than thirty days.
